Variegated Woolen Felt
The SecretLife of Woolen Felts
Woolen felts absorb and release water vapor tomaintain equilibrium with the water content of the surrounding air. The feltshave a hydrophilic, water-absorbing interior, and a hydrophobic, water-repellingexterior. A thin protective membrane, like a wax covering, is bonded to theoutside of each felt. Even chemicals like dry-cleaning fluids won’t remove it.The membrane is waterproof, but microscopic pores allow water vapour to pass through, like smoke through a screendoor.
OtherWoolly Facts
1.When you move from a warm, dry atmosphere to acold, damp one, wool releases heat slowly, buffering you from the temperaturedrop. (Cotton and synthetics cool immediately, and can make you feelchilled.)
2. Wool does not absorb oils or perspiration, soit won’t host odour-producing bacteria, making it naturally odourresistant.
3. Long, fine fibres(particularly those in merino wool) are soft next to the skin.
4. Wool doesn’t cling to skin, and won’t pick updirt particles as easily as other fabrics.
