The charge air cooler is also known as intercooler in many countries. It is extensively used in diesel engine to increase power and performance, after the air is compressed by the turbo charger (pump), the air is heated and become less dense. To make the fuel burn more effectively, the compressed charge air need to be cooled. This is usually done by a large air to air heat exchanger or a more compacted water cooled heat exchanger.
