Uses
Zinc bromide is a kind of Lewis acid in organic chemistry. This product is mainly applied in both completion fluids and cementing fluids of the offshore oilfield. Also, it can be used for radiation protection, and the fabrication of battery electrolytes, photographic materials, pharmaceuticals, artificial fiber, and more.
Precautions
In oil and natural gas wells, zinc bromide solutions are utilized to replace drilling mud when transiting from the drilling phase to the completion phase, or during the workover operation. The highly concentrated brine solution provides the fluid with its weight of 20 pounds/gallon, which makes it efficient in preventing both flammable oil and gas particles in high pressure wells. However, high acidity and osmolarity may lead to corrosion and handling problems. In view of the fluid dehydration, operators are obliged to wear slicker suits and rubber boots.
