The ordinary hot-rolled I beam is also known as the steel girder. The shape of cross section resembles a horizontal letter H. The dimension of the cross section is indicated by beam height (h) × web thickness (d) in millimeters. For example, the I 160×88×6 stands for an I-beam with a beam height of 160mm, a flange width of 88mm, and a web thickness of 6mm.

Another identification is indicated by the beam height alone in centimeters, like 16#. For those I-beams that share the same beam height but have different web thicknesses and flange widths, we put a, b, c after the beam height to distinguish them from each other, such as 32a #, 32b #, 32c # and so on.

Categories
The hot-rolled I beam comes in two types:
1. Ordinary I-beam (GB706-88, GB1591-79)
Main purposes: the ordinary beam is widely used for building structures, bridges, vehicles, brackets and machinery.

2. Light I-beam (YB163-63)
The ordinary and light I-beams both have gradually thinning flanges, forming certain angles. When a light beam has a beam height same to that of an ordinary one, it will have wider flanges and thinner overall appearance. With same load-bearing capacity guaranteed, the light beam shows better stability and saves the metal material, so it is a more economic choice. Its application is similar to that of the ordinary one. It is also primarily used for large structures, manufacturing plants, bridges, vehicles, shipbuilding and so on.
