An engine is a mechanism thattransforms thermal energy generated by burning fuel into mechanical energy. Itaccomplishes the energy conversion through air intake. The inflammable gasmixture (or fresh air) admitted into the air cylinder is compressed and ignitedwhen the compression stroke is coming to the end (or the inflammable mixtureformed by high-pressure injection of diesel fuel into the cylinder is ignited).The combustible mixture burns and expands to drive the piston downward. The laststep is to expel the waste gas after combustion. To sum up, an engine works ina four-step process: intake, compression, power and exhaust.

The engine consists of six systems, including:
1. Valve actuating mechanism: it consists of engineparts like the valve, valve spring, valve lifter, rocker, rocker shaft,camshaft, and camshaft timing gear.
This unit makes sure the inflammable gas mixture or air is driven into thecylinder in time as the engine works, and the waste gas in the cylinder isexpelled after combustion.
2. Lubricating system: it is composed of engine parts such as the oil pump, oilstrainer, primary oil filter, secondary oil filter, oil duct and pressure limiter.
The oil pump allows the oil in the oil pan to be of certain pressure which isdelivered through the oil duct to the friction surfaces of the parts. This notonly reduces friction resistance and abrasion, but cools and cleans thefriction surfaces.
3. Fuel delivery system: the fuel delivery system fora carburetor type engine comprises the gasoline tank, gasoline pump,carburetor, gasoline filter, air strainer, and intake/exhaust manifold; thefuel supply unit for an electronically controlled gasoline injection system ismade up of gasoline tank, electric gasoline pump, and gasoline filter; and theconstituent parts for the fuel feeding system of a diesel engine include thediesel oil tank, oil transfer pump, diesel filter, oil injection pump, fuelinjection pipe, fuel spray nozzle, air filter, and intake/exhaust manifold.
The fuel delivery system serves the purpose of supplying clean fuel to theengine in time.
4. Cooling system: it is constituent of such engine parts as theradiator, water pump, cooling jacket, thermostat, and fan blade.
Under the action of the water pump, the water circulation in the system resultsin the cooling of high temperature parts. The heat existent in the coolingwater is sent off by the radiator, which keeps the engine working temperaturewithin a normal range.
5. Starter mechanism: it consists of the storage battery, starting dynamo,starting switch, starter relay, and flywheel ring gear.
The starter makes the engine start to work or change from an idle state intorunning state.
6. Ignition system: it comprises storage battery,ignition switch, ignition coil, distributor block, contact breaker, highvoltage wire, and spark plug.
It is used to light up the compressed, inflammable gas mixture in thecombustion chamber promptly at a moment required by the working engine toensure smooth operation.
