These pipe threading lathes are CNC machines with 2-axis continuous interpolation. They are extremely flexible to use, and reliable in their performance and machining accuracy. These machine tools are capable of turning metric or inch thread, straight or tapered thread, single or multiple-lead thread. They are applicable to medium-volume production of large diameter pipe in the petroleum and water industries, providing extremely good return on investment.
These CNC pipe threading lathes operate by holding the part steady while the cutting tool which is mounted on a CNC controlled facing head is rotated around the part. The CNC facing head is of a design patented by SMTCL and, compared to threading machines of similar capacity, is characterized by a much smaller spindle bearing, and therefore can achieve much faster threading speeds. Since the part does not rotate with the spindle, the power consumption is much lower, with much reduced noise level.
The pipe threading lathes incorporates a fully automatic chip conveyor which operates very smoothly, for overall greater efficiency of production.
There are two sets of part clamps, the front one being a multi-point device, and the rear one being of three floating points. The two clamping modes of these devices greatly reduce the distortion of the parts, and make the CNC pipe threading lathes suitable for the processing of thin-walled tubing.
With optional material handling equipment, parts can be loaded and unloaded automatically. The loading device is powered by a frequency converter motor which can be controlled for speed by the CNC. The auxiliary material handling equipment can include a 'walking beam' upender which can place a finished part on to an unloading shelf while another semi-finished part's being processed. A small production line can be created with 2 of the threading machines and the material handling equipment together.
