What are sprockets and where do we usually use them?
Sprockets are profiled wheels with metal teeth. And the metal teeth are usually meshed with perforated or indented materials like a chain or track.
Sprockets can be found in many applications, for example, used in the drivetrain of bicycles, motorcycles as well as cars and tanks. Additionally, sprockets can also be used in many other machines which need to transmit rotary motion between two shafts.
In a bicycle, sprockets are usually connected by a chain. By changing the diameters of sprockets on each side of the chain, we are able to regulate the overall gear ratio of the chain drive. A higher gear ratio will offer a faster pedaling on even roads and a lower gear ratio will offer an easier pedaling for climbing slopes. As a result, in a bicycle, we can obtain different speeds by providing different sized driving sprockets and different sized driven sprockets.

What is a gear and where do we usually use them?
Gear is also a teethed wheel. Different from sprockets, gears are usually meshed with each other or any other device with compatible teeth.
Gears are usually used for transmitting rotational torque within a transmission device. More often than not, gears can be used to produce mechanical advantage only if the combined gears have different diameters.
Gears has wide range of applications, for example, exposed gears are regularly used in old clocks, single-stage planetary gears are extensively used in small fractional horsepower motors and bevel gears are usually used for lifting floodgates, etc.
