The steel pipe nipple used inplumbing and piping is a fitting that consists of a short piece of pipe. Usedfor connection of two other fittings, it is usually provided with a male pipethread at each end. Its length is generally specified by the overall lengthwith threads. In order to facilitate wrench to grasp, the product may bedesigned with a hex section in the center. Threadsused are mostly BSP, BSPT, NPT, NPSM and rarely Metric. There are several typesof this product.

Because of totally threaded area, the close type has almost no exposed areawhen screwed tightly between two female fittings. It can be unscrewed bygripping one threaded end using a pipe wrench. However, this may damage thethreads and lead to replacement. Hence, a special steel pipe nipple wrench isused to grip the inside of the pipe, causing no damage to the threads. Inaddition, a reducer or unequal nipple is available in two different sizes ofends, while the barrel or pipe type usually made from pipe has threads only atboth ends.
