DDGS(Dried Distillers Grains with Solubles)
DDGS, which is short for Dried Distillers Grains withSolubles, is a byproduct ofthe ethanol production process. It a high nutrient feed valued by the livestockindustry. When ethanol plants make ethanol, they use only starch from corn andgrain sorghum. The remaining nutrients, i.e. protein, fiber and oil, are usedto create dried distillers grains with solubles.A third of the grain that goes into ethanol production comes out as DDGS. Each bushel of grain used in the ethanol-makingprocess produces 2.7 gallons of ethanol; 18 pounds of DDGSand 18 pounds of carbon dioxide.
DDGS is rich in cereal and residualyeast proteins, energy, minerals and vitamins. It is an excellent digestibleprotein and energy source for beef cattle. It can comprise 20-30% of the rationDM. it can also be used in turkey and swine applications. DDGSis a valuable feed for both feedlot and dairy cattle. Besides, DDGS also is fed to poultry. Recent studies show excellentnutritional value of DDGS in swine diets, and its useis increasing in the pork industry.
