Ferrous Sulfate is an essential body mineral. Ferrous sulfate is a type ofiron. In your body, iron becomes a part of your hemoglobin and myoglobin. Hemoglobin carriesoxygen through your blood to tissues and organs. Myoglobin helps your muscle cells store oxygen.

Ferrous sulfate is used to treat iron deficiency anemia (a lack of red bloodcells caused by having too little iron in the body). As a nutritional supplement, ferrous sulfate isused to fortify foods and to treat iron-deficiency anemia, together with otheriron compounds. In addition, it could be used to prevent and cure some diseaseslike Iron-deficiency doldrums and depressed, shoulder bone edema, dyspnea, temperature anomalies and so on. It could alsopromote the growth of livestock and fish, boost the immune system and increasethe cost-effectiveness of feed. Besides, added in the feed of hens, they willlay more eggs.

Industrially, ferrous sulfate is mainly used as a precursor to other ironcompounds. It is a reducing agent, mostly for the reduction of chromate incement. As Colorant, Ferrous sulfate was used in the manufacture of inks, mostnotably iron gall ink, which was used from the middle ages until the end of the eighteenth century. It also finds use in wool dyeing as a mordant.

Ferrous sulfate can also be used to stain concrete and some limestones and sandstones a yellowish rust color.Woodworkers use ferrous sulfate solutions to color maple wood a silvery hue. Inagriculture, it could adjust the pH value of the soil. In horticulture it isused for treating iron chlorosis and killing moss. Although not as rapid-acting as iron chelate, its effects are longer-lasting. It can bemixed with compost and dug into to the soil to create a store which can lastfor years. It is also used as a lawn conditioner, and moss killer.

Ferrous sulfate is sometimes added to the cooling water flowing through thebrass tubes of a turbine condenser. It forms a corrosion-resistant, protectivecoating on the inside of the tube. It is used as a gold refining chemical toprecipitate metallic gold from auric chloride solutions (gold that has been dissolved into solution with aqua regia). It has been applied forthe purification of water by flocculation and for phosphate removal inmunicipal and industrial sewage treatment plants to prevent eutrophication of surface water bodies. It is usedas a traditional method of treating wood panel on houses, either alone, dissolved in water, or as a component of water-based paint. Green vitriol isalso a useful reagent in the identification of mushrooms.
