As an inorganic salt of divalent cobalt, cobalt sulfate is widely used in manyfields, like in the electroplating and electrochemical industries and as acoloring and drying agent. The most form of cobalt sulfate is cobalt sulfate heptahydrate.

As feed additive, cobaltsulfate is used in animal feeds as a mineral supplement and used on pastureswhere the forage is cobalt deficient, to provide enough cobalt for ruminants toproduce vitamin B12. In the electroplating and electrochemical industries, itis used as a drier for lithographic inks, varnishes, paints, and linoleum; instorage batteries; and as a coloring agent in ceramics, enamels, glazes, andporcelain. It is used in veterinary medication to prevent and treatcobalt deficiency in ruminants, and use in humans to improve hematocrit, hemoglobin, anderythrocyte levels. In addition, it could be applied as catalyst, analysisreagent, tyre adhesive, etc.

Cobalt is considered an essential element for animals, including humans, becauseit is incorporated into the vitamin B12 molecule. Green plants do notsynthesize vitamin B12; microorganisms in ruminants (cud-chewing mammals withmulti-chambered stomachs, such as cattle and sheep) are the only majorproducers of vitamin B12 in the food chain. Vitamin B12 contains about 4% cobalt by weight. Ruminantsrequire 0.07 to 0.10 ppm cobalt in their feed, and lack of cobalt in the soil and feedstuffs preventsthem from synthesizing enough B12 for their needs. To prevent cobalt deficiencyin cattle and sheep, cobalt sulfate may be added to feedstuffs, or cobalt maybe added to the soil to increase its levels in plants.
