Fiber glass rod is a kind of inorganic non-ferrous material with remarkable properties. Its gravity is 1.8g/cm3, and its weight is a quarter of steel and two thirds of aluminum. However, its hardness is ten times of that of hard PVC (polyvinyl chloride). Therefore, its rigidity is much greater than aluminum, and reaches 1.7 times of that of normal steel.
Fiber glass rod is formed by pultrusion which is a continuous process for manufacture of glass fiber reinforced plastic with constant cross-section. With the aid of forming machine, the reinforcement materials such as fiber glass roving and continuous mat are impregnated with base materials like unsaturated polyester resin, and pulled through a heated die where solidification happens. Then the final formation is done by consistent pulling force.
Therefore, this kind of thermosetting polymer is characterized by smooth surface, dimensional stability and prominent rigidity.
